from Sincona sale 11, lot 3558

This specimen was lot 3558 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"VATIKAN/KIRCHENSTAAT Innocenzo XI. 1676-1689. Piastra o. J. (1676-89), Rom. Sehr schön. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, piastra without date, Rome mint. Good very fine.)"

Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1676-89 without dates and is reasonably available. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the second specimen 30.84 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-4096; KM-407; Berman-2088.
