CNG sale Triton XXVII, lot 1054

This specimen was lot 1054 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,960. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Papal (Papal state). Clement X. 1670-1676. AR Testone Rome mint. Struck 1675. Coat-of-arms surmounted by crossed keys and Papal tiara / King David seated right, playing harp; in exergue, coat-of-ams surmounted by tasseled gallero. Deep iridescent toning with traces of luster. Superb EF. One of the most beautiful Testone issues in the Papal series. From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection. Ex I. Vecchi 7 (6 October 1997), lot 1856." The SCWC notes four different testone for 1675 (KM 363, 364, 365, 366), all featuring the Holy Door on the reverse. KM 364 and KM 366 have the papal arms on the obverse. KM 365, with the door bricked up; KM 363 shows the door open with the dove of the Holy Spirit inside. All are scarce. One piastra was three and a half testone.
