Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1121

This specimen was lot 1121 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €200 (about US$278 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Pie V (1566-1572), (Antonio Ghisliere), AR teston, Ancône. D/ Armoiries. R/ Saint Pierre trônant de f., bénissant et ten. une clé. Très Beau. (Papal States, Pius V, 1566-72, silver teston, Ancona mint. obverse: arms; reverse: St. Peter entroned, holding a key and raising a hand in blessing. Very fine.)"

This testone of Pius V from the Ancona mint is considerably scarcer than the Rome product (Ber-1092). None of the silver issued during his reign is particularly common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.96 g, .920 fine silver[2], this specimen 9,36 g.

Catalog reference: Munt. 32. Berman 1105.
