Papal States (1566-72) bianco
This specimen was lot 1727 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$271 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Pie V (1566-1572), (Antonio Ghisliere), AR bianco (mezza lira), s.d., Bologne. D/ B. à d., vêtu de la chape. R/ BONONIA MATER STVDIORVM Lion rampant à g., ten. une bannière. Belle patine. Très Beau. (Italy, Papal States, Pius V, 1566-72, undated silver bianco or half lira, Bologna mint. Obverse: bust right, dressed in a robe; reverse: lion rampant left, holding a banner. Beautiful patina, Very Fine.)"
The city of Bologna in the north of the Papal States used a different coinage than the Rome issues. This bianco or mezza lira was roughly equal to half a testone. Like most of the silver issues from this locale, it is rather scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 4,65 g.
