This denomination was struck for circulation in 1962, 1966-75, 1982-83 and 1993. It matches the United States nickel in every respect and many dates were actually struck in the USA. This year was made in Philadelphia. This specimen was lot 30154 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "PANAMA. Gold 5 Centesimos Piefort, 1982. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Mintage: 15. VERY RARE in this format, the present specimen glistens with a tremendous degree of alluring l[us]ter."
Recorded mintage: 8,000,000 plus est. 15 in gold.
Specification: regular issue: 5 g, copper-nickel, 21.21 mm diameter, plain edge. KM-P2: 0.400 fine gold.
