This specimen was lot 3794 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $382. The catalog description[1] noted, "Panama. 100 Balboas, 1975. 500th Anniversary - Birth of Balboa. In original cachet holder. Choice Brilliant Proof." This type was issued by the Franklin Mint for Panama 1975-77. The gold content matches the British sovereign. Unfortunately, collecting Panamanian coins lost its popularity after the Franklin mint overissued proof sets and commemoratives in the 1970's and 1980's. For years, few Panamanian coins sold for more than melt.

Recorded mintage: 44,000 uncirculated plus 75,000 proofs.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.900 fine gold, .236 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-41.
