Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71428

This specimen was lot 71428 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "PANAMA. Balboa, 1975. Ottawa Mint. NGC MS-64. Struck in copper-nickel, but with a reverse of the silver issue. A well struck issue with flashy surfaces and bold details." This type was struck 1975-76 at Ottawa for Panama. Panama was one of the few countries to copy the U. S. mint practice of strikig coins using copper-nickel clad copper. The Franklin Mint used this design to strike silver and copper-nickel proofs, which were marketed to collectors.
