Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1246

This specimen was lot 1246 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €70 (about US$95 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, PADERBORN, Evêché, Wilhelm Anton von Asseburg (1763-1782), AR 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1765. D/ Armoires. R/ Valeur et date dans le champ. Griffes au revers. presque Très Beau. (Germany, bishopric of Paderborn, William Anthony of Asseburg, 1763-82, silver 24 mariengroschen of 1765. Obverse: arms; reverse: value and date in the field. Scratches on reverse, about Very Fine.)"

This is the only issue of this denomination by this state altho several gulden exist, including one from 1765 with the bust of the bishop (KM 241). By this time the gulden had declined to half a thaler from the former two-thirds altho many issues were still marked "⅔". The diocese went Lutheran in the sixteenth century but was reclaimed for the Church by the Jesuits in the beginning of the seventeenth. The year 1765 also saw the issue of a 2 mariengroschen (KM 228, KM 233), a 1/12 thaler (KM 235), a 20 kreuzer (KM 234.2), a thaler (Dav-2514) and a gold pistole (KM 244). Paderborn was annexed to Prussia in 1802 and never recovered its independence.
