Steve Album sale 51, lot 923
bishopric of Paderborn in 1789

This specimen was lot 923 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "PADERBORN: Wilhelm Anton von Asseburg, 1763-1782, AR 2/3 thaler, 1764, once lightly cleaned, XF, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." Numista states this type was struck 1764, 1765, 1767, 1770 while the SCWC lists only 1764 and 1770. Paderborn, like Hildesheim, retained a Catholic bishop long after all of the inhabitants had gone over to Lutheranism. William Anton was a canon of the cathedral and was not ordained a priest until after he was elected bishop. He saved the diocese from dissolution during the Seven Years War and helped to rebuild it thereafter. Paderborn was mediatized in 1802 and passed to Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, 35 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-238.
