Paderborn in 1547, between Lippe and Waldeck

This specimen was lot 31450 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States. Paderborn. Clemens August of Bavaria 2/3 Taler (Gulden) 1723-AGP VF35 NGC, Münster mint, Expressing deep cabinet patina and balanced wear throughout Clemens' portrait, the reverse quite attractive with well-defined Coat of Arms. A rarely encountered type from the first year of his appointment as the Archbishop of Cologne." Two-thirds thaler equaled one gulden equaled 24 mariengroschen, altho in this period the gulden slipped to half a thaler. The bishop of Paderborn was suffragan to the bishop of Münster but still managed to issue a few coins for his domain. This example realized over quadruple the catalog value.
