Osnabruck 1721-JJJ 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 1089 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €300 (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"OSNABRÜCK, BISTUM, Ernst August II. von York, 1716-1728. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler) 1721, Osnabrück. Sehr schön +. (bishopric of Osnabrück, Ernest Augustus II of York, 1716-28, 24 mariengroschen of 1721, Osnabruck mint. Very fine or better.)"
Two-thirds thaler equaled one gulden equaled 24 mariengroschen. This type was also issued 1724 and was accompanied by 12, 6, 3, 2 and 1 mariengroschen. All of the ecclesiastical states were mediatized by Napoleon and handed over to his allies in 1800-06. The bishopric of Osnabrück, like its neighbor Munster, had very few Catholics and was ruled by a Lutheran prince.
