Künker sale 293, lot 1088

This specimen was lot 1088 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €550 (about US$741 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"OSNABRÜCK, BISTUM, Carl von Lothringen, 1698-1715. 1/8 Reichstaler 1715, Münster, auf seinen Tod. Von großer Seltenheit. Gestopftes Loch, sehr schön. (bishopric of Osnabrück, Charles of Lorraine, 1698-1715, one-eighth thaler of 1715, on the death of the bishop. Very rare, plugged hole, very fine.)"

All of the ecclesiastical states were mediatized by Napoleon and handed over to his allies in 1800-06. The bishopric of Osnabrück, like its neighbor Munster, had very few Catholics and was ruled by a Lutheran prince.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Kennepohl 340; v. Schr. 929, KM unlisted.
