Künker sale 424, lot 567

This specimen was lot 567 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,682 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · OSNABRÜCK, BISTUM Ernst August II. von York, 1716-1728. Reichstaler 1725, Osnabrück. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit umgelegtem Hosenbandorden, zu den Seiten gekrönter Löwe und Einhorn als Schildhalter auf einer Leiste, daran Spruchband mit PRO LEGE ET GREGE, auf der Krone Leopard nach l.//Roß springt nach l., im Abschnitt die Signatur J J . J . (Münzmeister Jost Jacob Jenisch). RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Osnabrück, Ernest Augustus II, duke of York, 1716-28, thaler of 1725, Osnabrück mint. Obverse: crowned and quartered arms, Order of the Garter around, supported by a lion and unicorn, motto below, lion left on the crown; reverse: a stallion charges left, initials in exergue. Very rare, minor planchet defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is the last thaler from this state. Wikipedia comments, "Ernest Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (17 September 1674 – 14 August 1728), was the younger brother of George I of Great Britain. Ernest Augustus was a soldier and served with some distinction under Emperor Leopold I during the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1715, he became Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück."
