SB822-30291r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30291 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Olmutz. Ducat, 1820. Vienna Mint. Rudolph Johann von Oesterreich. NGC MS-64 Prooflike. Undoubtedly one of the more tantalizing and exceptional examples of the type extant, this glistening near-Gem radiates with tremendous mirroring to the fields and a subtle frosting of the devices, ultimately yielding a dazzling cameo nature. Compare to a similar specimen, though clearly inferior, that realized a hammer of €12,000 in October 2021. From the Augustana Collection." Archduke Rudolf Johann was the last archbishop to issue coins for his state. In 1820, he had minted a twenty kreuzer, half thaler, thaler and ducat (shown here). This ecclesiastical state was in Moravia, then part of Austria, now the Czech Republic.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, 21.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-107; KM-496.
