This specimen was lot 11595 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €65 (about US$68). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Oldenburg. 1/2 Groten, 1835. Oldenburg Mint. Paul Friedrich August. NGC EF-40 Brown. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Paul Friedrich August (b. 1784) was grand duke of Oldenburg 1829-53. He spent the Napoleonic Wars serving the tsar of Russia as governor of Estonia. This half grote (called a half groten in the SCWC) was struck in 1831 and 1835. The grand duchy survived until 1918, when the extinction of the Wilhelmine empire swept away all the German princely states.
