Oldenburg 1818 6 grote
This specimen was lot 11258 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €129 (about US$149). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Oldenburg. 6 Grote, 1818. Berlin Mint. Peter Friedrich Ludwig. NGC AU-53. Nice example of this two-year type. Traces of luster remain on both sides. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." In addition to this six grote, we note a four grote (KM 156), a twelve grote (KM 158) and a third thaler (KM 159) for the year. This type was previously struck in 1816 and had a face value of one-twelfth of a thaler.
Wikipedia comments, "Peter I or Peter Frederick Louis of Holstein-Gottorp (German: Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Holstein-Gottorp) (17 January 1755 – 21 May 1829) was the Regent of the Duchy of Oldenburg for his incapacitated cousin William I from 1785 to 1823, and then served himself as Duke from 1823 to 1829. He also served from 1785 to 1803 as the last Lutheran Prince-Bishop of Lübeck, until that Prince-Bishopric was secularized and joined to Oldenburg." The grand duchy survived until 1918, when the extinction of the Wilhelmine empire swept away all the German princely states.
