Oldenburg 1818 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 11256 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €69 (about US$80). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Oldenburg. 1/3 Taler, 1818. Berlin Mint. Peter Friedrich Ludwig. NGC EF-45. Nice example of this two-year type. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." In addition to this third thaler, we note a four grote (KM 156), a six grote (KM 157) and a twelve grote (KM 158) for the year. This type was previously struck in 1816. Numista states this coin was struck in Hannover.
Wikipedia comments, "Peter I or Peter Frederick Louis of Holstein-Gottorp (German: Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Holstein-Gottorp) (17 January 1755 – 21 May 1829) was the Regent of the Duchy of Oldenburg for his incapacitated cousin William I from 1785 to 1823, and then served himself as Duke from 1823 to 1829. He also served from 1785 to 1803 as the last Lutheran Prince-Bishop of Lübeck, until that Prince-Bishopric was secularized and joined to Oldenburg." The grand duchy survived until 1918, when the extinction of the Wilhelmine empire swept away all the German princely states.
