Sincona sale 39, lot 3158

This specimen was lot 3158 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,639 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Nurnberg, Stadt, Doppeltaler 1628. Geflügelter Genius mit Band auf der Brust hält zwei Schilde. Rv. Reitender Kaiser Ferdinand II. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kratzer im Feld. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, double thaler of 1628. Obverse: a winged cherub supports two shields; Reverse: emperor Ferdinand II. Very fine-extremely fine. Scratches on the field.)"

While many Nurnberger thalers of the Thirty Years War are readily available, this type, struck 1627-30, is very rare.
