Nurnberg (1800-01) ducat Fr-1916
The first specimen was lot 503 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 4,250 CHF (about US$5,325 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Nurnberg, City. Dukat o. J. (1800/1801). Auf das Neue Jahr. Stempel von Johann Peter Werner. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Nurnberg, undated ducat saluting the new year. Dies by John Peter Werner. Good extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 2032 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,531 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NÜRNBERG, STADT, Dukat o. J. (1800/1801), auf das Neue Jahr. Stadtansicht von Westen. GOLD. Graffito "1774" im Feld der Rückseite, vorzüglich. (city of Nuremberg, undated ducat, for the New Year. City view toward the west. "1774" scratched into the reverse field, extremely fine.)"
This issue is relegated to the Unusual World Coins by the SCWC. Whether or not it was an official coin, it definitely circulated. The city was annexed to Bavaria in 1806 and its coinage ended.
