Norway 1889 50 ore
This specimen was lot 30900 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Oscar II of Sweden 50 Ore 1889, MS65 NGC. Lustrous, satiny, surfaces with a touch of light gray toning and no flaws worthy of mention. The exceptional quality of this coin should make it worth multiples of its catalog value." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. The specimen shown here is from of a type struck 1877-1904 and was accompanied by one and two kroner of similar design. Many dates are very scarce. This one is a slightly better date.
Recorded mintage: 200,000.
Specification: 5 g, 0.600 fine silver.
