Norway 1862 specie daler Dav-244
This specimen was lot 763 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $5,445. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Karl IV. 1859-1872. AR Speciedaler. Kongsberg mint. Dated 1862. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Lightly toned choice uncirculated. Only one graded higher in MS 64. Very rare especially this choice. Purchased from Jess Peters, April 1973." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. This type, recorded for 1861-62, is now rare. It was struck to the Danish standard (Dav-75) rather than the larger Swedish riksdaler (Dav-356).
Recorded mintage: 62,000.
Specification: 28.69 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen Ø39 mm, 28.90 g, 6h axis.
