from Stack's Bowers November 2015 sale, lot 39521
Norway SB1115-39521r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39521 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. 8 Skilling (1/2 Mark), 1819-IGP. PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. So far, the only example the grading services have ever seen. Even in worn condition, a coin that commands a significant premium. Seldom seen this nice, the coin exhibits mostly white surfaces and just a smattering of tone. Virtually all of the detail remains on the rampant lion, the reverse legends being the only area of the coin with any measurable wear. If Norway is your niche, this coin surely belongs on the short list of bidding candidates for this auction." This coin passed for half a mark or one fifteenth of a specie daler, the crown-size coin of Scandinavia. Norway was under Swedish rule 1814-1907.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.500 fine silver, .054 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Sieg-8; KM-287.
