Norway 1803-IGM 1/5 speciedaler
This specimen was lot 1887 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NORVEGE, Christian VII (1766-1808), AR 1/5 speciedaler, 1803IGM, Kongsberg. Très Beau. (kingdom of Norway, Christian VII, 1766-1808, silver one fifth speciedaler of 1803, Kongsberg mint. Very Fine.)"
As punishment for supporting Napoleon, the king of Denmark was forced to cede Norway to Sweden in 1814 at the Congress of Vienna. After a stormy marriage, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden in 1907 and has been independent since. This type was struck by the Danish 1801 and 1803 and is scarce in nice condition. It was equal to 24 skilling or 1½ mark. Not much coinage is available from this period but we note 1/15 and 1/3 speciedalers (KM 271 and KM 266).
Recorded mintage: 92,000.
Specification: 7.31 g, 0.687 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM 272, A.B.H. 43.
