Norway 1802-IGM 1/15 speciedaler
This specimen was lot 70271 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. 1/15 Speciedaler, 1802-IGM. Kongsberg Mint. Christian VII of Denmark. NGC MS-64. Incredibly argent and blazing, this near Gem presents a solid strike and hints of amber-russet around the devices and legends, and stands as the finest graded in the NGC census." As punishment for supporting Napoleon, the king of Denmark was forced to cede Norway to Sweden in 1814 at the Congress of Vienna. After a stormy marriage, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden in 1907 and has been independent since. This type was struck by the Danish 1795-1802 and is scarce in nice condition. It was equal to eight skilling or half a mark, both denominations also struck on occasion.
Specification: 3.37 g, 0.500 fine silver.
Recorded mintage: 149,000.
