Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 78334

This specimen was lot 78334 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. 1/5 Speciedaler, 1798-IGM. Kongsberg Mint. Christian VII. PCGS VF-35. From the Richard August Collection." In 1795, the billon one, two, four eight and 24 skillings were dropped in favor of fractions of the specie daler (1/15, 1/5, 1/3 and 2/3). This type was struck 1796-1803 and is scarce in nice condition. As punishment for supporting Napoleon, the king of Denmark was forced to cede Norway to Sweden in 1814 at the Congress of Vienna. After a stormy marriage, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden in 1907 and has been independent since.
