Norway SB118-21277r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21277 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1642. Christian IV (1588-1648). NGC AU-55. VERY RARE in this state of preservation. A beautiful specimen displaying deep attractive old cabinet tone with underlying luster and great eye appeal. The slate grey tone throughout serves as a base with a multitude of colors amongst the devices and the peripheries such as cobalt and violet on the obverse while the reverse displays hues of cobalt, champagne and rose. A type which turns up in Europe occasionally but is seldom seen here. A magnificent example sure to see enthusiastic bidding from advanced collectors." This daler was struck for Norway by Christian IV, king of Denmark 1588-1648. Despite a steady issue for 1629-48, this type is rare.

Recorded mintage: 38,000.

Specification: 29.23 g, 0.882 fine silver, .828 troy oz ASW.
