Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74868

This specimen was lot 74868 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "NIGERIA. 1/2 Kobo, 1973. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Red. A reflective almost prooflike nature and blinding luster, this Superb Gem is sure to excite. From the Kings Norton Mint Collection." The naira, divided into one hundred kobo, was introduced in January 1973 at the rate of 1 GBP = 2 naira. Half, one, five, ten and 25 kobo coins were struck. No half kobo were struck after 1973. Inflation rendered all these coins worthless and they were withdrawn in February 2007. As of December 2023, US$1 = 825 naira.
