This specimen is the final date of a type issued 1939, 1946, 1950-56, 1965 and 1972-74. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair.
