This specimen is the first coin issued by Nicaragua as part of the F.A.O. series, along with a related ten centavos. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair. A regular issue five centavos also exists for 1974 (KM 27).
