Nicaragua 1975 500 cordobas Fr-5
This specimen was lot 34839 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicaragua: Republic gold Proof 500 Cordobas 1975 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Commemorative honoring the Colonial Church La Merced. Only 100 struck in Proof, 300 overall. Bright reflective surfaces and an overall impression that approaches perfection. From the Feeling Good Collection." This scarce issue was one of a series of NCLT's struck to raise money for disaster relief, the earthquake of ecember 1972 having leveled most of Managua. The Somoza regime was accused of embezzling the aid sent from other countries, stoking the Sandanista rebellion. Other coins in this series included KM 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 39, 40 and 41 in silver and gold.
