The first specimen was lot 71228 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1917-C. Ottawa Mint. PCGS MS-64+ Gold Shield. A sharply struck and highly attractive near-Gem example displaying booming cartwheel luster with just a hint of light tone in the peripheries." This type was struck in Ottawa for Newfoundland in limited numbers 1911 and 1917-19 and is fairly available in grades up to extremely fine. This date is common.
