This specimen was lot 39070 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1911. NGC MS-64. Lowest mintage for the four-year series at 200,000, with nearly all surviving examples showing some degree of wear. The coin offered here is one of fewer than a dozen seen at PCGS and NGC at this level or higher. A special coin on multiple levels with blistering bright white luster, razor sharp devices, and mark-free fields." This type was struck in Ottawa for Newfoundland in limited numbers 1911 and 1917-19 and is fairly available in grades up to extremely fine. This date is common. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 200,000.

Specification: 11.78 g, 0.925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW, 32 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-12.
