Newfoundland 1899 50 cents
This specimen was lot 26404 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $152.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Newfoundland. Victoria 50 Cents 1899 Narrow 9, XF40 ICCS, light tone at the edges, a planchet flaw runs from Victoria's chin down to the N in NEWFOUNDLAND." This type was struck at Heaton and London 1870-1900 for Newfoundland and is slightly heavier than the contemporary Canadian fifty cents. Struck in small numbers and exposed to long circulation, it is very rare in nice condition. Proofs exist. The SCWC mentions the 'narrow 9' and 'wide 9' varieties but awards neither a premium.
Recorded mintage: 150,000 (highest mintage date).
Specification: 11.78 g, 0.925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW.
