This specimen was lot 3698 in Goldberg sale 104 (Los Angeles, June 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "Canada - Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1898. Victoria. PCGS graded AU-53." This type was struck at Heaton and London 1870-1900 for Newfoundland and is slightly heavier than the contemporary Canadian fifty cents. Struck in small numbers and exposed to long circulation, it is rare in nice condition. Proofs exist.
Recorded mintage: 76,607, a fairly common date.
Specification: 11.78 g, 0.925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW.
