In 1967, New Zealand abandoned the sterling coinage she had used since the days of Captain Cook and adopted the decimal dollar and cent. This two cent piece was struck 1967-85 at London, Canberra and Ottawa, New Zealand lacking her own mint. It was made in large quantities and was superseded by the Maklouf bust of the queen (KM 59, struck 1986-89). The reverse depicts the leaves and flowers of the kowhai tree (Sophora microphylla).

Recorded mintage: 50,000,000 plus 25,000 proofs.

Specification: 4.15 g, bronze, 21.08 mm diameter, designed by Arnold Machin and James Berry.
