In 1967, New Zealand abandoned the sterling coinage she had used since the days of Captain Cook and adopted the decimal dollar and cent. This two cent piece was struck 1967-85 at London, Canberra and Ottawa, New Zealand lacking her own mint. It was made in large quantities and was superseded by the Maklouf bust of the queen (KM 59, struck 1986-89). Some years, such as 1970 and 1978-79, were struck only for the collector sets. The reverse depicts the leaves and flowers of the kowhai tree (Sophora microphylla).
