Neuchatel 1791 4 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3385 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Neuenburg/Neuchâtel, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. Batzen 1791, Neuchâtel. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, principality of Neuchâtel, Frederick William II, 1786-97, batzen of 1791, Neuchâtel mint. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1790-93 and is fairly common. Unlike the other cantons, which were nominally republican, Neuchâtel was ruled by the kings of Prussia 1707-1805 and 1814-57. The reverse motto, "᛭ SUUM ᛭ 1791 ᛭ CUIQUE ᛭", translates as, "To each his own".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 3.36 g.
