Sincona sale 91, lot 3386

This specimen was lot 3386 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Neuenburg/Neuchâtel, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. Vierer (Halbkreuzer) 1791, Neuchâtel. Variante mit U in der Rückseitenumschrift. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, principality of Neuchâtel, Frederick William II, 1786-97, vierer or half kreuzer of 1791, Neuchâtel mint, variety with "U" in the reverse legend. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1789-92 (common) and 1793-96 (very rare). Unlike the other cantons, which were nominally republican, Neuchâtel was ruled by the kings of Prussia 1707-1805 and 1814-57. The reverse motto, "᛭ SUUM ᛭ 1791 ᛭ CUIQUE ᛭", translates as, "To each his own".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.56 g, billon, 15 mm diameter, this specimen 0.51 g.
