Neuchatel 1798 4 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3389 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Neuenburg/Neuchâtel, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1805 und 1814-1840. Batzen 1798, Neuchâtel. 3.58 g. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, principality of Neuchâtel, Frederick William III, 1797-1805 and 1814-1840, batzen of 1798, Neuchâtel mint. Very fine.)"
This scarce type was struck 1798 only. Unlike the other cantons, which were nominally republican, Neuchâtel was ruled by the kings of Prussia 1707-1805 and 1814-57. The reverse motto, "᛭ SUUM ᛭ 1798 ᛭ CUIQUE ᛭", translates as, "To each his own".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 3.19 g.
