Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74212

This specimen was lot 74212 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gulden, 1858. Utrecht Mint. William III. NGC AU-58. A wholesome and brightly lustered example, delivering charming details and soft toning on the very lightly handled surfaces." This type was struck 1850-67 in substantial numbers. No one gulden coins were struck between 1867 and 1892. Curiously, while the half, one and 2½ gulden pieces were 0.945 fine silver, the five, ten and twenty-five cent issues were only 0.640 fine.
