Netherlands 1856 2-1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 1349 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €150 (about US$218 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, Koninkrijk, Willem III (1849-1890), AR 2 1/2 gulden, 1856. Krasjes. Prachtig. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III (1849-90), silver 2½ gulden of 1856, scratches, extremely fine.)"
The specimen is a better date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint for the Netherlands 1849-74. Most of the dates are common; this one is slightly better. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The 0.945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.
Recorded mintage: 909,545.
Specification: 25 g, 0.945 fine silver, .760 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered ★ GOD ★ ZY ★ MET ★ ONS.
