Netherlands 1840 10 gulden
The first specimen was lot 25208 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Willem I gold 10 Gulden 1840, MS65 NGC, super luster and excellent surfaces." The second specimen was lot 1537 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €320 (about US$513 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NEDERLAND, Koninkrijk, Willem I (1815-1840), AV 10 gulden, 1840, Utrecht. Krasje op kz. Prachtig. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William I (1815-40), gold ten gulden of 1840, Utrecht mint. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1818-40 at Utrecht and Brussels. The common dates are 1824-B, 1825-B and 1840; the rest are scarce to rare. The contemporary French gold twenty francs was 6.45 g.
