Sedwick Treasure Auction 28, lot 917
Sed28-917r.jpg

This specimen was lot 917 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nassau (German States), taler, 1863, Adolph, NGC MS 65. Choice example with smooth, lustrous surfaces draped in rainbow toning, higher grade than normally seen. Pedigreed to the Zeitlos Collection (stated on label) and purchased from Ludwig Grabow in November of 1956, lot #342, with collector's envelope." The duchy of Nassau was divided into Nassau-Weilburg and Nassau-Usingen in medieval times but was reunited when Nassau-Usingen lapsed in 1816. Nassau, in turn, was annexed to Prussia in 1866 when the duke took the Austrian side in a war. This one year type is much scarcer than the last thaler (Dav-750) despite the much larger mintage. Adolphe later became grand duke of Luxembourg (r. 1890-1905).

Recorded mintage: 145,170.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 36.67 grams.

Catalog reference: Thun-236; Jaeger-62; KM-79; Dav-749.
