Nassau 1825-CT thaler Dav-740
The first specimen was lot 1055 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NASSAU, HERZOGTUM Wilhelm, 1816-1839. Kronentaler 1825. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz/Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Nassau, William, 1816-39, crown thaler of 1825. Proof example, beautiful patina, about uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 32211 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[2] noted, "Nassau. Wilhelm Taler ('Kronentaler') 1825 PZ-CT MS66 NGC, KM 48. A superlative piece, with dark old cabinet toning and prooflike surfaces with underlying blue iridescence that highlights the devices. It's hard to find other examples of this type for comparison because it has very few, if any, equals. For the condition-conscious 19th century crown collector, it really doesn't get any better than this specimen." This two year type (1818, 1825) is scarce. In 1866, the duchy was swallowed up by Prussia and the coinage ended, tho one branch of the family now occupies the throne of the Netherlands.
