Naples and Sicily 1788-DP CC 120 grana Dav-1406
This specimen was lot 1344 in Áureo y Calicó sale 346 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €550 (about US$726 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1788. Fernando IV de Nápoles, Infante de España. Nápoles. DP/C/C-C. 1 piastra/120 grana. Primer período. Bella. Preciosa pátina. Ex Colección Godoy, Áureo 30/03/2004, nº 640. Rara así. EBC/EBC+. (kingdom of Naples and Sicily, Ferdinand IV, prince of Spain, one piastra/120 grana of 1788, Naples mint. First period. Handsome, nice toning, rare thus, extremely fine or better.)"
The SCWC notes that 12 carlini = 6 tari = one piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Ferdinand IV was the third son of Charles III, king of Spain 1759-88 and the younger brother of Charles IV. This type was struck 1786-94.
