Namur 1502 florin d'or Fr-351
This specimen was lot 858 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$780 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NAMUR, Comté, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), AV florin d'or au saint Philippe, 1502. D/ Saint Philippe de f., ten. une longue croix, les Evangiles et devant lui l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne couronné. R/ Croix fleuronnée, un briquet en coeur, cantonnée de deux couronnes et de deux briquets. Rare. Fines griffes. Très Beau. (county of Namur, Philip the Fair, 1486-1506, gold florin of St. Philip of 1502. Obverse: St. Philip facing, holding a long cross and the Gospels and before him the crowned arms of Austria and Burgundy; reverse: floriate cross, a firesteel at the center, cantonned with two crowns and two briquets. Rare, fine scratches, Very Fine.)"
This type is listed in Friedberg for 1499, 1502-03 and is the most available gold coin of the county. This denomination (and its half) is recorded from Namur (shown here), Holland, Brabant and Flanders. It was issued during the reign of Philip the Fair, son of Maximilian of Austria, and who served as the transition between Burgundian and Hapsburg rule.
