Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1051

This specimen was lot 1051 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,581 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), AV florin d'or au saint Philippe, s.d. (1496-1499), Anvers. 1er type. D/ Saint Philippe deb. de f., ten. une grande croix et les Evangiles. R/ Croix ornée, chargée d'un écusson de Brabant, cantonnée des écussons d'Autriche, Bourgogne nouveau, Bourgogne ancien et Brabant. Très rare Fêlure du flan. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Fair, 1482-1506, undated gold florin of St. Philip, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: St. Philip facing, holding a large cross and the gospels; reverse: ornate cross, charged with the escutcheon of Brabant, cantonned with the arms of Austria, new Burgundy, old Burgundy and Brabant. Very rare, planchet crack, Very Fine.)"

This coin is variously catalogued as a goldgulden or a florin and was nominally equal to a ducat. It was issued during the reign of Philip the Fair, son of Maximilian of Austria, and served as the transition between Burgundian and Hapsburg rule.
