Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 983. Note that the crowns and lilies are reversed

This specimen was lot 597 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €550 (about US$763 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), AV demi-florin au saint Philippe, s.d. (1500-1506), Anvers. Croisette initiale au revers. D/ Saint Philippe deb. de f., ten. devant lui l'écu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne. Avec S PHE en début de légende. R/ Croix fleuronnée cantonnée de deux couronnes et de deux lis, un lion en coeur. Rare Ponctuation par doubles croisettes. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Fair, 1482-1506, undated gold half florin of St. Philip, Antwerp mint, initial cross on the reverse. Obverse: St. Philip facing, bearing the crowned shield of Austria-Burgundy, with S PHE at the beginning of the legend; reverse: floriated cross cantoned with two crowns and two fleurs-de-lys, a lion at the center. Rare, punctuated by double crosses, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 983 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €360 (about US$450 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), AV demi-florin au saint Philippe, s.d. (1500-1506), Anvers. Croisette initiale au revers. D/ Saint Philippe deb. de f., ten. devant lui l'écu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne. Avec S PHE en début de légende. R/ Croix fleuronnée cantonnée de deux couronnes et de deux lis, un lion en coeur. Rare Nettoyé. A été monté. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Fair, 1482-1506, undated half florin of St. Philip, Antwerp mint, initial cross on reverse. Obverse: St. Philip facing, bearing a long cross, before him the Gospels and the crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: floriate cross cantonned with two lilies and two crowns, with a lion at the center. Rare, cleaned and mounted, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This coin is variously catalogued as a half goldgulden or a half florin and was nominally equal to half a ducat. It was issued during the reign of Philip the Fair, son of Maximilian of Austria, and served as the transition between Burgundian and Hapsburg rule.

Specification: 1.75 g, 0.986 fine gold; the first specimen is 1,62 g, the second specimen is 1,64 g.
