Namur 1499 patard

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24498

This specimen was lot 24498 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $132. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Namur. Patard, 1499. Philip IV the Fair (1492-1506). NGC VF-30. The two nines of the date are clearly discernible. Full legends on both sides. Toned." At this time, the Hapsburgs were consolidating their hold on the Low Countries, a process that would not be completed until emperor Charles V obtained the holdings of the bishop of Utrecht in the 1520's. Unfortunately, at the same time, Protestantism was spreading in the Netherlands, ripping apart the Hapsburg's hoped-for unity.
