Muhlhausen 1767 thaler Dav-2462
This specimen was lot 31021 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Muhlhausen (Alsace). Free City Taler 1767 MS64 NGC, Clausthal mint. With the name and title of Joseph II. The only 18th century Muhlhausen Taler issue, represented by a gorgeous Choice specimen tied for the highest grade on NGC's census. Meticulously rendered devices admit virtually no disturbance, harmonizing well with neat fields that give way to splashes of cobalt and violet at the peripheries. Ex. Herbert Grün Auction 44 (November 2005, Lot 656). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." While there is a town in Alsace called Muhlhausen (now called Mulhouse in France), the issuer of this coin was Mulhausen in Thuringia, which also issued a 2 pfenninge (KM 70), 3 pfenninge (KM 56.2), 1/24 thaler (KM 72), 1/12 thaler (KM 73), 2/3 thaler (KM 74) and a six pfenninge in 1767. Long an imperial free city, it was mediatized to Prussia in 1802.
